A Jewel Among the Rocks

One of the worst things about becoming an author, is now that I've spent so much time perfecting the skills necessary to write, I've learned the difference between good and bad writing. Reading bad literature used to be a mere annoyance, and besides, it didn't seem to happen that often anyway. But now I've become a snob...an honest-to-goodness literary snob. I seldom find any novels that are well-written, and find truly wonderful novels even less frequently.

However, when I do find a novel that I enjoy so much that I can turn off that pesky internal editor and just relish the story, I feel like celebrating. I want to stand on the rooftops and shout, "This is a wonderful story and everyone should read it!!!"

Have you ever felt that way?

What have you read lately that made you want to tell all your friends?

Hi, Donna! Recently, I can't say I've read something so spectacular that, like you said, I feel like shouting it from the rooftops. However, a while back I stopped into a local bookstore and ventured over to the clearance bin. There I found a book by Janet Mullany entitled "The Rules of Gentility" for a whopping $3. Now, beforehand, I had never indulged in a first person/present perfect historical romance, but afterwards... Well. I am so glad I did. The story is so fresh and funny, the dialogue so witty and believable, you find yourself sitting on a chaise lounge beside Philomena (that's the heroine) sipping tea from a chintz cup and gossiping about how Inigo's breeches cling to his thighs so deliciously. I've read it several times over since that fateful trip to the bookstore, and have since bought copies for my friends (they loved it, too, by the way). And I'm a Janet Mullany for life.

A Janet Mullany *fan* that is. Excuse me while I go slap my fingers for failing to edit my own comment.
