A funny thing happened on the way to the booksigning....
At the Tucson Festival of Books, I met a real, live stormtrooper! He was nicer than I expected, and had kind of a sexy voice. I didn't say out loud that I thought he was a little short for a stormtrooper. He was, afterall, armed with a blaster. ;-)
In all reality, I think he was with a fantasy/sci fi group at the festival to do publicity for a sci fi conference taking place later in the year.
After my close encounter with the stormtrooper, my critique partner, Vicki Gaia, and I taught a writers workshop called Take that Manuscript and Edit. The room was packe
d! Three people even stood at the back of the room the entire hour. Our moderator did a count and said there were 87 people in the class! The Tucson Book Festival sure knows how to treat their guest authors/speakers! They assigned volunteers to see to our every need, provided a lounge with food where we could retreat and rest, and had a booksigning for us directly after the class. The campus bookstore, as well as Borders bookstore, also had our books for sale.
I enjoy booksignings and teaching live classes because it give me a chance to interact with fans and to talk about writing--my favorite subject--without fearing that I'm boring them and always looking for that tale-tell glazed over look in their eyes!
And you never know who you might meet. I'm hoping the next booksigning might bring someone like Hugh Jackman. Hey, it could happen!
