Golden Quill finalist and winner and my reaction

When I was announced as a finalist in the Golden Quill in fantasy for Queen in Exile, and a WINNER in Regency Historical for The Guise of a Gentleman, the Desert Rose RWA newsletter editor asked for my reaction. Here is our short interview:

1) What was your reaction/initial thoughts when you heard you were a finalist?
Okay, this might sound dorky, but my first reaction was "Yay! someone does like my writing!"
I'd just gotten a rejection from a NY agent for a different manuscript, so getting that kind of validation was huge!

2) What was reaction/initial thoughts when you heard you were a winner?
I was a bit stupefied, especially when she told me I'd beat out some NY Times best sellers, some of whom I've read and adored. Then I got a little smug about that agent who'd rejected me. (Yes, I guess I have a bit of a shrew in me. Okay, maybe more than just a bit). It also really motivated me to keep trying and going forward with these other writing projects.

3) What's coming up next for you on your writing journey based on this achievement?
I'm going to exploit this for all it's worth and promote, promote, promote. I'm also going to query other agents about a new manuscript and not give up on it. It's also given me some motivation to finish this other huge project that's been scaring me because it's such a large deviation from my normal thing. But different is good. And hey, it just might be a winner, too.

And, not to forget the on going Summer Treasure Hunt, where you can win books and other fantastic prizes, (and it's not to late to jump in and join the fun) here's the winner and answer for June 8th prize, Fateful by Cheri Schmidt:

Winner: Kristen Tucker of AZ
Answer to today's question: Lucas
